The awareness ladder: how strangers become clients

If you do not understand awareness, you do not really understand online prospecting. This is the mental model that saves you years of guessing.
Every prospect sits somewhere on a ladder. It runs from never having heard of you to ready to become a client. Your only job online is to walk them up it, one rung at a time.
The five rungs
Unaware. They do not know you, and they do not think they have a problem. This is first contact, so the goal is simply to be seen.
Problem aware. They do not realize their current way of doing things is costing them. Post things that show the cracks in their current approach.
Solution aware. Now they see the problem, so show them a fix exists. Not your specific service yet. Just proof that this kind of problem gets solved.
Product aware. This is where you make the case for why your way is different from every other advisor they could call.
Most aware. They have the problem, they want the fix, and they believe yours is the best one. This is where you pitch, and not a moment earlier.
Why most advisors get this wrong
The classic mistake is pitching a call to someone on the bottom rung. A stranger gets a message about booking a meeting and ignores it, because in their head there is no problem to meet about. The pitch was not wrong. The timing was.
Match the message to the rung. Content moves people up the ladder in the background, and the ask only goes out when someone is near the top. That is the whole system.
